Sew every day, don't burn out

Building confidence on your quilting journey

It's November already!

At the beginning of last month I went to Houston for the International Quilt Festival. You can read about my experience - and the classes I took - in this blog post.

There's things I would do again... and things I would definitely NOT do again ;)

Since I've been home, I've been working on changing my mindset around sewing. I realized I'd become so focused on finishing projects that it was starting to feel like an obligation.

So I've been experimenting with something different - limiting how long I sew each day while making sure I actually sew every single day. For me, that's usually about an hour at a time. Then I stop. Even if I'm not finished. Even if I want to keep going.

You know what? Having to stop regardless of what I've accomplished is so relaxing!

I've been recording these daily sessions on YouTube in a series of shorts called "My Week in the Studio". It's just what I'm doing each week as I work to protect my love of sewing instead of pushing to finish things.

Speaking of peaceful creating... if you're looking for thoughtful gifts for the quilters in your life (or yourself), my merch shop has "Sew Slowly" tees, "Keep Calm and Rethread" mugs, and more gentle reminders that creating should restore you. Take a look here.

Happy sewing! ;)

P.S. Something else is coming December 3rd - a free learning community I've been building where quilting feels doable instead of overwhelming. I'm really looking forward to building a place to connect. That pattern I promised in November will be in the new community :)

Life is stressful. Piece. Need to say goodbye? Unsubscribe here How has late summer been for your quilting? I have mostly been doing quilting not piecing. My daughter made this beautiful king sized top that I quilted for her. It was the first really big – took up the whole width of my machine – quilt I’ve done on my machine. She is satisfying to quilt for as she had it bound and on her bed within 48 hours of getting it back from me! To push myself to get creating again I took a look through...

Life is stressful. Piece. Need to say goodbye? Unsubscribe here Unraveled is finally done — and it unraveled me a little in the process. Since my goal was to represent fabric unraveling, I guess that’s appropriate. I tried new things and they didn’t work or didn’t work as anticipated. 1) I used a new-to-me thread in my longarm. I spent so much time adjusting tension to make it work right! Once I started quilting with that thread I was locked into using it for the whole quilt so I just...
